Crowns

What are crowns?

Crowns are like protective “jackets” that completely surround a tooth, providing an added layer of strength in addition to covering defects and dark fillings. They're used to help strengthen teeth with very large fillings or large amounts of decay, and they're also commonly placed on teeth after root canals to add protection and cover up discoloration that typically follows root canal procedures. Crowns also play an important role in the placement of dental bridges, providing a protective layer to the teeth that help support the bridge.

How are crowns put in place?

Before a crown is placed, some of the natural tooth material must be removed to allow room for the crown so it fits properly and comfortably. Once the material is removed, an impression is made that will be used to create the crown. While the crown is being made, a protective covering will be placed on the tooth to protect it. After the crown is made, it's cemented in place using a special adhesive designed to create a strong bond able to withstand the rigors of chewing and biting. Finally, the crown will be shaped and polished so it fits comfortably and blends in with neighboring teeth.

Do crowns require special care?

No, you can care for your crowns the same way you care for your natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing and regular trips to the dentist for checkups.

How long will my crown last?

That depends on where the crown is located (how much stress it's exposed to) and how well you care for your teeth. Generally, crowns last from five to 15 years, although some crowns can last more than 20 years. Most insurance companies will pay for replacements if a crown is lost or damaged after five years of wear.
